Fans of actors Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington will love this black-and-white illustration by Marcellus Hall featuring the duo in Training Day, an acclaimed 2001 crime thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua about a corrupt narcotics officer and an idealistic rookie cop undergoing a grueling 24-hour evaluation in Los Angeles’s roughest neighborhoods. This illustration was published in The New Yorker’s October 15, 2001 issue to accompany a full review of the film by David Denby. We offer the original.
Created with ink on 11.5” x 8.75” Strathmore 400 Series drawing paper. Ethan Hawke’s image is a “paste-up,” re-drawn on Canson sketch paper and pasted onto the illustration. Marcellus’s amalgamated initials appear in the lower right corner of the illustration. The foot of the page contains handwritten notes referencing the actors, the film title, and the date of creation of the piece. The reverse side contains additional handwritten references to the film, the date of publication, and Marcellus’s signature. Minor creasing along the top and right edges. Overall, very fine condition.
