Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall of Alison Elliott, Peter Gallagher, and William Fichtner in The Underneath, an American crime film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The 1995 film depicted here is based on the 1934 novel Criss Cross by Don Tracy and is a remake of the classic film noir gem of the same name released in 1949. This illustration appeared in The New Yorker’s May 15, 1995 issue alongside a segment on the small film in the magazine’s Movies section.
