October Sky

Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall depicting the 1999 movie October Sky, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Laura Dern, and Chris Cooper. The film was based on the true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who inspired his community by pursuing rocketry as a boy. The New Yorker published this piece in its double February 22–March 1, 1999 issue alongside its review of the movie.

Ink and watercolor on 11.75” x 12.25” Strathmore 400 series drawing paper. Marcellus signed his initials in the lower right corner of the piece. The reverse side contains the dates of creation and publication of the piece, among other notes, and Marcellus’s signature stamp and return address. A protective tissue cover sheet is taped to the reverse side which folds over the front of the image. Some minor rippling from the watercolor paint application. Overall, excellent condition.
