Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall to promote the glam-grunge rock musical Nirvanov, which fused Anton Chekhov’s 19th century play Ivanov with the final troubled days of Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain. The New Yorker published this piece in its double October 18 & 25, 1999 issue to promote the play, which ran off-off Broadway in New York City in October 1999.
Ink, watercolor and gouache on 8.5” x 9.75” Bristol board. Marcellus signed his initials in the lower right corner of the piece. The reverse side contains the dates of creation and publication of the piece among other notes, and Marcellus’s signature stamp and return address. A protective tissue cover sheet is taped to the reverse side which folds over the front of the image. Overall, excellent condition.
