Luzhin Defence

Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall of Emily Watson and John Turturro in The Luzhin Defence, a film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel about a Russian chess genius. This piece was published in The New Yorker’s double April 23 & 30, 2001 issue to highlight the opening of the film.

Ink, watercolor, and gouache on 11” x 8.5” Fabriano Uno 140 lb. watercolor paper. The reverse side contains assorted handwritten notes referencing the film, the dates of creation and publication of the piece, and Marcellus’s return address. Excellent condition.
