Kings of Comedy

For fans of stand-up, here’s a beautiful tribute to four masters, Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac, Cedric the Entertainer, and D.L. Hughley performing in The Original Kings of Comedy, which toured across the country between 1997 and 2000. The New Yorker published this illustration by Marcellus Hall in its September 4, 2000 issue to accompany its review of the Spike Lee film of the same name, which captured a single stop on the tour. We offer the original.

Ink, watercolor, and colored pencil on 8” x 10” Arches 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper. The artist’s initials appear in the lower right corner of the image and his handwritten notes appear in the lower margin. The reverse side contains additional notes, the creation and publication dates of the piece, and Marcellus’s return address. Excellent condition.
