Glockenspiel

Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall. This piece accompanied a two-page article in The New Yorker’s double July 6 & 13, 2009 issue, featuring New York City’s participation in the “Make Music” festival celebrated across the world on the summer solstice. New York City’s version—depicted in Marcellus’s illustration—included a celebration in Central Park known as “Science is Only Sometimes a Friend,” featuring an orchestra of glockenspiels, including toy glockenspiels distributed to children in the crowd.

Ink and watercolor paint on 11.25” x 6” Arches 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper. The lower margin of the piece contains the artist’s signature and the dates of its creation and publication. The reverse side contains an abbreviated version of Marcellus’s signature. There are clean pinholes in the corners of the piece, but it is otherwise in pristine condition.
