Original color illustration by Marcellus Hall published in The New Yorker on March 8, 1999. This painting accompanied a lengthy piece in the magazine on the American premiere of Tennessee Williams’s early play, “Not About Nightingales,” featuring actor Corin Redgrave.

Ink, watercolor, colored pencil, and gouache on 14.75” x 12.5” Strathmore 400 series drawing paper. Marcellus’s signature appears in ink in the lower-right corner.

The reverse side references the date of creation, the date of publication, and the artist’s return address. A protective tissue cover sheet is taped to the reverse side which folds over the front of the image. The paper contains minor creases and rippling from the watercolor paint application. Excellent condition.
